Eggless Chilli Chocolate Cake With Whittard Of Chelsea Chilli Hot Chocolate Powder

As you all know that my blog completed an year on 19th and I still do not believe that an year has passed. I wanted to celebrate it with another dessert recipe after I tried my hands on Chocolate Almond Fudge.  I wanted to bake a chocolate cake with some unique flavors.

I remembered that I tried chocolate with chilli flakes on it when I visited Oxford some months back. I loved the taste and me being a fan of spicy food and chocolate it was the true treat for me. So, just like that chocolate today’s cake is also about chilli and chocolate.

I also decided it was the best way to make use of Whittard Of Chelsea Chili Hot Chocolate Powder that was sent to me. I must mention that I am in love with the product. It is a perfect balance of taste and aroma. The hot chocolate powder is sweet and chocolaty in taste where as the hint of chilli gives that missing kick to it. Just spoon out 2 tablespoon of powder and mix with warm milk and it will prove to be a perfect mood booster for these chilly winters.

Whittard Of Chelasea has been around since 1886 when Walter Whittard opened his first tea and coffee store on Fleet Street in London.  Whittard is known for its teas, coffees and hot chocolate and they posses huge list of flavours and taste as per your requirements.  It is always so nice to browse their website and look for those tasty tea, coffee, hot chocolate and of course the collection of China crockery. Do visit their site- www.whittard.co.uk and www.whittard.com .

Now, coming back to the recipe I chose to make Eggless Chilli Chocolate Cake and I was very happy with taste and result. The cake of course dint rise much (as you can see in the pictures) but I know if one adds eggs to it this cake is sure shot winner.

Ingredients:

For cake

Butter- 50 grams

Condensed Milk- 200 grams

All Purpose Flour/Maida- 1 cup

Baking Powder -1/2 tsp

Baking Soda- 1 tsp

Vanilla Extract- 2 tsp

Coke/Soda- 1 cup

Chilli Flakes- 1 tsp

For decoration

Whipped cream – ½ cup

Cherries- 8-10

Chilli flakes- 1 tsp

Chocolate coated almonds- ¼ cup

Method:

Preheat the oven at 350 degrees F/ 180 degrees C
In a bowl beat together butter, condensed milk, chilli flaked and then vanilla extract with an electric whisk.
In another bowl sift dry ingredients - all purpose flour, chocolate powder, baking powder and baking soda.
Into the wet ingredients add the dry ingredients in two batches along with coco cola or soda which has to be added until the right consistency of the batter arrives and blend well.
Grease 8 inch cake pan and pour in the batter.
Place in the oven and bake for 15 -20 minutes or until the inserted toothpick in the cake comes out clear.
Cool the cake on the wire rack.

Assembling and decoration:

Slit the cake in to 2 halves .

Cover the 1st half with whipped cream and some chilli flakes.
Finally put the second half on the cake and complete it with almonds, cherries and whipped cream.

Notes and variations:

  • I used hot chocolate powder, but instead cocoa powder can also be used.
  • The amount of chilli flakes can be added or subtracted as per your liking.
  • The cake can also be made with eggs. Use 4 eggs and 1/2 cup of sugar as an alternative for condensed milk and coke.
  • Decorating the cake is completely tour choice. The cake can be covered chocolate ganache, whipped cream icing, butter cream icing, fondant etc etc…Or can be enjoyed just plain as well.
Taste:

Soft, hot and chocolaty.

  14. I had heard lot about hot chocolate desserts, but never tried it. I had tasted chocolate with sea salt and they were surprisingly good. So I bet the chili flavor would be perfectly balanced with the sweet chocolate. Nice designs on the cake.
